The Arts of Living

The Context

If humanity was created to pursue an ever-advancing civilization, the Art of Living can be a powerful instrument for promoting that civilization. What, then, are the fundamentals of that art — fundamentals that would generate sustained hope as a constructive force in our individual and collective life? Before such a discussion, we need a clear context for what we mean by “art” and what we mean by “hope.” These are reviewed in this talk.

Presentation Summary

The Sun of Hope Rises from the Darkness of Despair

This talk explores the relationship between hope, society, young people, and art, examining how disappointment in the realisation of aspirations and the persistent experience of powerlessness can diminish a society’s ability to imagine a different future. Young people are not only bearers of hope within society, but can also become creators of art and narratives that keep hope alive. By enabling people to imagine and experience an alternative reality, art can challenge indifference and passivity and open up a space for the renewal of hope. This talk focuses on the role of young people and art in preserving the possibility of imagining a different future and resisting the erosion of hope within society.

Presentation Summary

Art: Creating Hope Through a Physician’s Eyes

Medicine treats disease, but healing often begins when a patient feels truly seen and understood. This presentation explores how art—through attentive listening, narrative, and visual expression—can restore hope in clinical practice. By “telling the patient’s story back to them,” physicians acknowledge not only illness but also identity, resilience, and possibility. The presentation is inspired by the Bahá’í teaching that “Where there is love, nothing is too much trouble, and there is always time.” It argues that art is not separate from medicine; it is a compassionate language that enables healing by affirming the dignity and hope that remain within every person, even in the face of pain.

Presentation Summary

Hope: A Feeling That Must Become Action

This talk explores hope not as optimism or a passive feeling, but as a process that begins with imagination and moves toward reality through action. The arts can make suffering and social challenges visible in ways that awaken a desire for change, while also making possibilities that do not yet exist in society imaginable and tangible. When freedom, justice, or a better future can first be envisioned through poetry, painting, storytelling, or other forms of artistic expression, imagination can become a force that moves us toward their realization.

Presentation Summary

The Forbidden University: a documentary film on the Baha’i Institute for Higher Education (BIHE)

In Iran, Bahá’ís have been systematically denied access to higher education. In response, the community created the Bahá’í Institute for Higher Education (BIHE), an informal network sustained by students, educators, and community members who risk arrest, imprisonment and exile for the right to learn.

The Forbidden University tells their extraordinary story through intimate first-person accounts and striking animated reenactments, revealing how education became both an act of resistance and a source of hope. Executive produced by Penn Badgley, the film is a powerful testament to courage, resilience, and the fundamental human right to education.

Presentation Summary

Open Wide the Doors; a story of Hope in Captivity

In March 2008, the Intelligence Bureau of Mashhad summoned Mahvash Sabet. She told her husband she would be back home in Tehran by the evening. She wouldn’t be released for ten years. This is a story of the tests she faced and how her faith helped her to overcome these challenges.

In 2018, during her brief respite of freedom between two decade long prison sentences, Mahvash Sabet asked two translators to work on her memoirs and make a book into English that could convey her story—an uplifting story of hope which Mahvash was able to secretly send out of prison, page by page, over the years: Open Wide the Doors demonstrates how hope, compassion and human dignity cannot be confined within prison walls!.”

Presentation Summary

Hope in the Works of Václav Havel

Milan Kundera, the renowned Czech author, famously posited that “optimism is the opium of the masses.” His distinguished compatriot, the playwright Václav Havel, similarly drew a sharp distinction between optimism and hope. For Havel, hope was defined as “the capacity to strive.” He argued that hope is not the conviction that something will turn out well, but the certainty that something makes sense, regardless of how it turns out—and that we are active participants in it.

In this presentation, drawing on Havel’s writings, it will be argued that while optimism breeds passivity, “social hope” demands an active, collective stance to drive systemic change. Social hope requires the existence of a cohesive “we”—a community striving to forge a shared understanding of the common good, backed by an unwavering belief in the possibility of its realization.
